Starting position
<\/strong>If an elite athlete is no longer able to participate in sport due to injury and out of the media spotlight, this can affect the image that is portrayed by the media and consequently influence how the athlete is publicly perceived. Ultimately, having a negative knock-on effect on the athletes, their partners and the athlete\u2019s management. The challenge here is to turn this crisis into positive advertising.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\r\n <\/div>\r\n<\/section>\n\n

Challenge<\/strong>
Five and a half months before her appearance at the Rio Olympic games in 2016, Nicola Spirig suffered\u00a0multiple fractures to the back of her left hand\u00a0after\u00a0crashing\u00a0in the first race of the season. The Olympic champion\u2019s hand\u00a0was\u00a0strengthened with three plates and 23 screws. The severe bruising to the right shoulder\u00a0was even more painful than\u00a0the hand. The dream of\u00a0a\u00a0fourth Olympic Games\u00a0was about to disappear.\u00a0samm\u2019s task:\u00a0to remove any doubts or\u00a0fears\u00a0about the rumours\u00a0that\u00a0Nicola\u00a0would not\u00a0take part in the Olympics. Instead demonstrate\u00a0a combative, fit and optimistic athlete making\u00a0rapid\u00a0progress\u00a0in her training.<\/p>\n

The samm Approach<\/strong>
How can you get the television images of Nicola\u2019s terrible crash out of\u00a0people\u2019s\u00a0minds? By\u00a0setting up a Q&A with\u00a0Swiss TV. Two hours after the complex hand operation, the \u00absuperwoman\u00bb is\u00a0already\u00a0sitting in the rehabilitation\u00a0centre\u00a0of the hospita,\u00a0converted into a TV studio.\u00a0Despite the anaesthetics, Nicola presented\u00a0herself to the TV audience as the Nicola the viewers know \u2013 clear, focussed and strong. In the weeks\u00a0following the incident,\u00a0Nicola showed\u00a0a desire to compete \u2013 took\u00a0part in up to three fitness tests in seven days and allowed\u00a0the public to share her battle back to the world\u2019s elite via print, online and social media. Swiss TV supported\u00a0her\u00a0throughout her journey.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\r\n <\/div>\r\n<\/section>\n\n

The Result<\/h2>

Due to the injury, Nicola\u00a0was\u00a0not able to compete in a single race before the Olympic Games, not even the European Championships.
But instead of complaining about her\u00a0unfortunate\u00a0luck with the injury, the \u201csuperwoman\u201d demonstrated\u00a0strength and desire to compete via\u00a0the\u00a0national and international media. Her messages\u00a0were: no-one swims eight-kilometer training like me. No-one does such hard bike training sessions as I do. And no-one takes part in half-ironman races\u00a0excepted\u00a0me.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In a 50-minute\u00a0documentary, Swiss Television\u00a0portrayed\u00a0the story of a woman who gets up after her crash, fights for her comeback and wins silver in Rio. A story that started as a negative report turned\u00a0into an optimistic, combative story and\u00a0ends with\u00a0the most successful triathlete in history.\u00a0<\/p>\n
